This is why I do periodic purges, to make sure that I’m staying in touch with people I care about and not getting flooded with crap from people who basically mean nothing to me.

Yea that’s the way, and I’d never actually done before, that’s why I probably got rid of so many people!

After deleting a lot of casual acquaintances and old friends that I no longer talk to and aren’t really close to on facebook, my housemates have alerted me to the fact that a few of the people I deleted have been using it as an opportunity to talk amongst themselves about how funny it is that I deleted them and how ridiculous I am for having different opinions to them, and generally using it as a way to assert to themselves how much better they are than me. It’s been bugging me since I found out for a couple of reasons, in part because of that talk-you-down-behind-your-back-to-make-ourselves-feel-better thing I’ve always found pretty needlessly cruel and childish, and it annoys me that even as (more or less) adults the people around me are still doing it, but also I find it pretty weird that people have made this small thing I did for myself in my personal online spaces all about them.

The reason I chose to go on a deleting spree was because Facebook has increasingly this year become a much more open and personal place for me to talk (about myself and my family/girlfriend/housemates). I post about a lot of stuff that’s important to me often as a way to work through it with friends, and also a lot of political/moral stuff that are generally unpopular opinions, while still using it to communicate on a daily basis with the people I am closest to. A lot of the people I had on my list don’t really need to be that involved in the daily machinations of my life, and vice versa, or we just didn’t have the same values/much in common. I got rid of something like over 300 people (about half of my list), and in the end it was actually kinda fun because as Ollie said it’s pretty cool to remember that you don’t owe people shit.

And I guess that’s the thing I’m trying to get at at heart, the way some people have chosen to take me changing my perspective on, and making decisions about, my own online space as some sort of intentionally passive-aggressive gesture at them personally kind of confuses and amuses me. The fact that they can’t seem to see me making decisions about who I want to interact with, and having opinions that I stand for, without this sort of childish primary-school-esque conflict rhetoric is kind of laughable, especially considering I DON’T actually owe anyone anything when it comes to who I allow to get involved with my personal space/conversations. Given the reaction these people clearly don’t really care about me as a person with thoughts and feelings or really give a shit what I have to say, and I don’t really need that where I’m trying to live my life, which tbh was sort of the reason I wanted to unfriend people in the first place.

I don’t know, it’s been bugging me and I just wanted to get my feels out a bit, in the end I have like zero regrets about cutting people out of my space who aren’t going to be genuine and caring with me. Whatevs I guess.
